Celebrate Food Safety Month and Win!
September is National Food Safety Month – what a great time to remind even the youngest of consumers about food safety! The NCDA&CS Food & Drug Protection Division hopes you will join us in the celebration. After all, food safety impacts all of our lives at least 3 times per day.
We are hosting two contests for elementary students:
- Coloring contest (grades K – 2nd): you can either download the coloring sheet below or we will gladly send you copies of the sheet
- Essay contest (grades 3rd – 6th): ask your students to submit a 1 page essay on “Why Food Safety is Important to My Family”
To submit your entries or receive more information, please contact Wendy Campbell, NCDA&CS Food & Drug Protection, 1070 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1070 or by email at wendy.campbell@ncagr.gov.
Entries from grand prize winners will be displayed at the NC State Fair. All participants will be given prizes and grand prize winners will be chosen from each participating school. Prizes include pencils, magnets, erasers, and refrigerator thermometers. Entries submitted after October 6th will not be judged, but participants will still win a prize.
This year, we are providing additional information on safe handling of fresh produce. Plus we still have a variety of food safety information on our site:
- Safe storage times
- Safe cooking temperatures
- Specific tips on handling produce safely
- Emergency preparedness tips
- Online coloring pages for children
- Food safety quizzes for all ages
For more information, please contact Wendy Campbell at (919) 733–7366 or wendy.campbell@ncagr.gov.
