In North Carolina we have 14 major farm commodities which totaled $6.6 billion in cash receipts for 2002. Currently we rank third in the nation for poultry production. This includes the turkey, broiler, quail and egg industry.
735 million broilers were produced in North Carolina in 2002 which means that each working day, approximately 2.9 million North Carolina broilers are marketed. The North Carolina poultry industry is highly conscious of product quality. Well over half the broilers and turkeys produced in North Carolina are sold at grocery stores with company names on the label. North Carolina also produces a wide variety of processed products such as cold cuts, sausage, fillets, nuggets and gourmet entrees.
The egg industry is also an important aspect of the poultry industry. North Carolina produces nearly 8% of the nation's broiler hatching eggs. In 2002 the Tar Heel egg industry produced 2,518 million eggs.
