SJ_LS850 St. Joseph, MO Fri Jan 02, 2008 USDA-MO Dept of Ag Market News NATIONAL FEEDER & STOCKER CATTLE SUMMARY - WEEK ENDING 01/02/2009 RECEIPTS: Auctions Direct Video/Internet Total This Week 18,800 19,400 None 38,200 Two Weeks Ago 210,700 44,900 2,400 258,000 Last Year 62,300 29,800 None 92,100 The nationwide feeder cattle market was not well tested during the New Year’s holiday week as most auction markets remained closed for the second full week and direct trading was very slow. However, it should be noted that a definite higher undertone prevailed throughout the Midwest where several salebarns did resume business. Higher trends were quoted in most of the open markets, including the St. Joseph, MO Stockyards where 3800 head of feeders were on offer to an active group of buyers that were anxious to get back to work. Prices ranged 2.00-6.00 higher with several instances as much as 10.00 higher on top quality calves under 600 lbs. Supplies are expected to be heavy next week if the weather cooperates while many producers have been waiting for the market to turnaround (which it has) and others want to post sales on the 2009 tax year. Auction receipts will be heavy across the Midwest and in Colorado, where Stock Show Specials will be held in conjunction with the National Western in Denver. Movement in the Southern Plains has slowed, but could pick up soon as dry conditions are forcing many wheat cattle off pastures. Cattle market moods are entering the New Year on the positive side with gains posted on the futures market and strong fundamentals supporting ideas of a bullish 2009. This week’s light auction volume included 53 percent over 600 lbs and 39 percent heifers.
