Employee of the Month honor

Gail Weams with Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler | High res version
RALEIGH – Gail Weams of Asheville was presented the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Employee of the Month award for her many volunteer activities that help improve her community and the state.
Weams, a 27-year veteran of the department, is a field representative for the Food Distribution Division and works with schools and agencies that participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Commodity Food Program. Her area includes 26 western counties as well as the Cherokee Indian Reservation.
Weams is active in her community and regularly volunteers with the Adopt-A-Highway Program, the Manna Food Bank and a local humane society. She also volunteers with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and co-founded the WNC Parrot Head Club, which has a strong community outreach component. Weams is on the board for the WNC Down Syndrome Alliance and co-chairs the organization’s annual Tropical Gala and Auction.
“The amount of time and energy that Gail gives back is phenomenal, and is indicative of her service to recipient agencies, fellow employees and North Carolina’s people, animals and environment,” said supervisor Bob Sitton. “She is a positive reflection on the Department of Agriculture.”
Weams and her husband, Steve, have a 4-year-old black Labrador named Spooner. She is a graduate of Pisgah High School in Canton and Western Carolina University in Cullowhee.
