Station Facts
The Caswell Research Farm (CRF) is located in the center of the Coastal Plain area of Eastern North Carolina in Lenoir County, just west of downtown Kinston, NC, on Highway 70 Business. CRF has 1,262 acres of woodland, cropland, and pastures. Established in the mid 1920s, the farm was used as food source and therapeutic training for mentally-handicapped citizens residing at the adjoining hospital. Since its transfer from the N.C. Department of Human Resources in 1974 to the N.C. Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, Caswell Research Farm has redirected its focus to agricultural research and is well suited for large plot research.
The Station in Action
There is a constant need for research to improve the production of food and fiber for sustaining the world’s increasing population. Projects must relate to improving cultural practices, adaptability, and needs as well as addressing environmental concerns.
Field Crops
The production of nutritional resources to maintain animal research is important at the Caswell Research Farm. Each year, corn, soybeans, small grains, and hay crops are planted and harvested. Field crop research involves pest management practices, genetic studies, yields, and fertilization studies.
Forestry
Current forestry research evaluates the growth rates of conventional and paraplow planted pine trees. A 50-acre lobllolly pine planting investigates what species of insects affect tree growth.
